In a momentous announcement, the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), led by its International Director for African Affairs, His Eminence Amb. Dr. John Metchie, declared Liberia’s President, George Opong Weah, as the recipient of the prestigious International Peace Prize Medal Award for the year 2023. The accolade stands as a testament to President Weah’s commitment to fostering peace, particularly in the wake of Liberia’s recent presidential election.
The decision to bestow this honor upon President Weah was grounded in the remarkable conduct of the just-concluded election, which culminated in a runoff. The election was notably marked by a lack of intimidation and electoral violence, a rarity in many African countries. The IAWPA commended the Liberian people for expressing their democratic will in a peaceful manner, setting an example for the continent.
President Weah’s history with the IAWPA is notable, as he previously received the International Peace Mayor Award in 2018. This earlier recognition acknowledged his dedication to promoting peace, a commitment that persisted throughout his presidency, culminating in his acceptance of the election results in 2023, distinguishing him from leaders who cling to power against the popular vote.
The award presentation, scheduled for January 2024, will take place at the President’s office in Monrovia, Liberia. Notable figures from the IAWPA, including the World Peace President, His Excellency Amb. Per Stafsen, and the Country President from the United Kingdom, His Excellency Amb. Dr. Michael Pinda, along with Amb. Declan Oguine, the European Intl. Coordinator, will grace the occasion. Eminent Peace Ambassadors from various countries, including Canada, France, Germany, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and others, have expressed their commitment to attending this momentous ceremony.
Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke, the International Spokesman of the association, emphasized that the event aims to make history in Liberia, celebrating the peaceful transition of power with President George Weah’s graceful exit. He anticipates that this occasion will attract attention and contribute to sustainable development, not only for Liberia but for Africa as a whole. Nkweke also commended the efforts of the incoming President, Joseph Boakai, for his role in ensuring the peaceful outcome of the election.
Amb. Dr. Sammy David, the Country Director of the association in Liberia, expressed his excitement about the upcoming award presentation, highlighting its significance as the highest form of recognition from the IAWPA. He stated, “It is the highest award from the association, as the international community is on the invitation list to participate in the award ceremony, and it will be a huge success.” The event promises to be a beacon of hope, celebrating not only the individual accomplishments of President George Weah but also the collective achievement of Liberia in maintaining peace and democratic values.
