In a formal welcoming program organized by the JNB Movement New England Chapter, President-elect Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. expressed profound gratitude to the Liberian diaspora in Providence, Rhode Island, for their instrumental role in the recently concluded elections. The event, attended by various Liberian community leaders, showcased the unity and strength of the diaspora across the Northeastern United States.
Acknowledging the challenges of the election campaign, President-elect Boakai reflected on the immense support received from both local and international Liberians. He highlighted the pivotal role of the people’s voice in sustaining Liberia’s democracy and recognized the diaspora’s crucial contribution to a global movement for positive change.
Boakai expressed heartfelt appreciation for the diaspora’s financial and material contributions, expertise, media outreach, activism, and critical voices that played a pivotal role in raising awareness and popularizing the message of change and transformation.
Turning to his vision for Liberia’s future, President-elect Boakai emphasized the need for inclusive governance and popular participation in decision-making. He stressed the importance of empowering the people to ensure political stability and social cohesion.
Addressing economic challenges, Boakai advocated for a structural shift in the economy to reduce inequality. He highlighted the significance of natural resource exploitation benefiting the entire population, with a focus on value addition and sustainable development. Agriculture emerged as a key sector for economic growth, with strategic investments proposed to leverage Liberia’s comparative advantage.
President-elect Boakai also emphasized addressing historical structural barriers contributing to inequality and social tensions. He proposed an annual conference on diaspora engagement to facilitate collaboration between Liberians abroad and the homeland’s development agenda. Recognizing the diaspora’s impact, he pledged to nurture their role as a serious partner in implementing the country’s development agenda.
