Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung of Liberia recently hosted a delegation from the United States for Global Criminal Justice, led by Ambassador-At-Large Her Excellency Beth Van Schaack, at his office on Capitol Hill. The meeting, which took place against the backdrop of efforts to establish a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia, marked a significant step forward in the country’s pursuit of justice and accountability.
Central to the discussions was Liberia’s progress towards establishing the much-needed court, which would address past atrocities and economic crimes that have left lasting scars on the nation. Ambassador Schaack underscored President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s dedication to the court, citing his inaugural address as a testament to his unwavering support for justice and ending impunity in Liberia. Drawing on examples from Sierra Leone, where similar courts have successfully prosecuted individuals for grave offenses, Schaack emphasized the importance of the court in addressing the severity of crimes and ensuring justice for victims.
